The Sault Ste. Marie Public School Senior Soccer Championship was won by the Prince Township Public School in 1974. Prince was the first school outside the City of Sault Ste. Marie to win a sports championship.
This event was a most memorable event for the following students: Timmy Grasley, Tony Gioventu, Bobby St. John, Rodney Evans, Tom Pinder, Michael Hargis, Rick Folz, John Iachetta, Rob Marshall, Robert Rankin, Frank Pozzebon, and Kickers: Patrick Daigle, Craig Waite, Wayne Snider, Bentley Lafleur, and myself ( Rainer Karg ).
Participants from the city, believed that our school was just a hick country school that most assuredly didn't know how to play soccer. But we proved them wrong. A janitor from Prince had originally started to prepare us boys to learn the sport, and because of our continued interest it wasn't long before Mr. Bruce Bedell had a competitive soccer team.
Our goals were somewhat controversial at times One instance I remember particularly well, because one of my corner kicks from the far end of the field resulted in a goal against our opponents. So we played the game again, and we won.
The final game was held at Sir James Dunn, and it was
a tense one. Our tying goal had the score at 1-1. We went into overtime, and
guess what? We did it! We won! The Prince Township Public School Soccer Team
of 1974 had proved lot of city kids to be wrong about our " winning character".
