Armand and Viola moved their family to Prince Township in 1920. They purchased the McNair farm located on the north side of Base Line, west of Gagnon Road. Armand had the fortune of acquiring Prince Township bush lots where he was able to log 480 acres of virgin timber consisting of pine, oak, maple, white birch and spruce. In 1934, Armand built his own gas operated sawmill, which he kept in operation for 51 years.
Fred Reed , brother of Viola Gagnon, also operated a
portable sawmill in the area. In 1949, 1,000 board feet would bring a price
of $16.00 per. Fred would work from spring to fall and would sometimes log with
Peter Denys during the winter months. Fred once told me of a time when he was
at Moore’s Point, and waterlogged white pine was being removed from the
waters. It was twenty two feet in length, and five feet in diameter.
