As a child grwoing up in Korah Township, I have many fond memories of Prince Township. My late father, Lloyd Lemcke, was Clerk of Prince Township for many years.
My grandfather, Gordon Marshall, served on council, and my great uncle Clarence Hill was Township Reeve.
In those days there was no Township office, so our home on the Second Line served as such. There were no set hours for paying taxes, buying dog licenses, collecting bounties on small animal pelts, etc. - so everyone dropped in at their convenience.
There wasn't a week went by that us kids weren't asked if we wanted to go "Prince" for a ride, as my Dad would have some Township business to tend to. It was always an adventure. I have many happy memories of Gros Cap where it was a great treat to go to Daigles for fish & chips on a Sunday. Our Sunday School picnics were also held there. Oakwood Inn was the place to hold wedding receptions, where everyone got to see their neighbours and friends. Lloyd Avery and his band entertained. I remember it was a beautiful place set in the trees.
Many days of summer were spent at my grandfather’s camp on the shore of Lake Superior at Gros Cap, where we could watch the huge freighters, pick blueberries, swim in the chilly waters, and keep our eyes peeled for bears.
As a high school student, I got to meet a lot of kids from Prince as we all rode the same school bus (and a long ride it was) all the way to Sir James Dunn, with stops at Tech and Collegiate. Many of these same people are among my good friends today.
I am sure that my father knew every family personally during his time in office. Many of these same families and their descendants still call Prince home. They were friendly, country people who always had time to stop for a chat, and get caught up on the latest happenings.
I have tried to keep my own children, and now grandchildren,
informed on a bit of history, landmarks, and memories of Prince. Prince Township
is a Great Place to Remember!
